Gideon’s Decision to Break the Cycle

Gideon King knew something had to change.

His life wasn’t necessarily falling apart. He had a job. He had friends. He had a routine.

That was part of the problem.

“I was stuck in this really repetitive cycle,” Gideon said. “Every day I’d wake up, go to work, hang out with friends, and then go to bed thinking…I just did the same thing I did yesterday.”

Gideon had become good at his job, but he couldn’t see himself moving forward.

“I didn’t want to be stuck doing the same thing forever,” he said. “I wanted something different.”

A friend introduced him to 4:13 Strong, and Gideon decided it was time to take a step in a new direction.

Starting With the Small Things

Gideon’s journey began with Mental Toughness Week and then the 40-Day Challenge.

One of his earliest experiences was a challenging hike with the other men. The hike itself wasn’t completely unfamiliar territory for Gideon, he had hiked before, but the return trip up a steep hill tested him.

“The hike was tough, especially on the way back,” he said. “But being out there with the guys, pushing through together, that was really cool.”

As the 40-Day Challenge began, Gideon identified something very specific he wanted to change.

He wanted to be on time.

Before coming to 4:13 Strong, being 10 or 15 minutes late to work wasn’t unusual. Gideon understood that his lateness didn’t just affect him. When he was responsible for opening the store, other employees could be forced to come in early, work could get behind and customers could arrive before everything was ready.

So he started changing his routine.

“I want to be on time to everything,” Gideon said. “That’s something I struggled with before.”

The solution wasn’t complicated.

He began laying out his clothes the night before so that when the alarm went off, he could get up, get ready and go.

It was a small change.

But building a different future often starts with changing the small decisions made every day.

A New Direction

Gideon originally came to 4:13 Strong hoping to begin a different career.

Through the program, that opportunity came with Mortenson Construction, where Gideon began working on a project at Vanderbilt University.

The man who had entered 4:13 Strong because he felt like he was going nowhere was suddenly learning new skills, developing a stronger work ethic and building a career in a new industry.

But the changes taking place weren’t limited to employment.

During his time at 4:13 Strong, Gideon renewed his commitment to Christ and was baptized on campus.

The repetitive cycle he had described at the beginning of his journey was being replaced by something different—purpose, discipline, faith and a clearer sense of where he wanted his life to go.

Reaching Graduation

By March 2026, Gideon had met all of 4:13 Strong’s graduation requirements and was ready to move off campus.

On April 16, he returned to receive his 4:13 Strong graduation jacket.

The moment represented much more than completing a program.

Months earlier, Gideon had arrived wanting to break a cycle. He had identified punctuality as one of the basic habits he needed to change and hoped 4:13 Strong could help him begin a new career.

Now he had followed through.

And the progress didn’t stop at graduation.

Gideon continues to excel at Mortenson Construction.

He has also become active in his church, using his time and abilities to serve others. This summer, that included building garden beds to be used for Vacation Bible School.

It’s another picture of how much has changed.

Gideon came to 4:13 Strong because he wanted something different for himself.

Today, he’s building a career, participating in his church and using his abilities to contribute to something beyond himself.

Breaking the Cycle

Gideon’s story isn’t defined by one dramatic decision.

It’s a story about recognizing that the direction of his life needed to change and then making the daily decisions necessary to change it.

Get up on time.

Prepare the night before.

Show up.

Learn something new.

Work hard.

Keep going.

Those decisions eventually became a new pattern.

The young man who once went to bed thinking, “I just did the same thing I did yesterday,” is still building his future one day at a time.

But now those days are taking him somewhere.

For Gideon, 4:13 Strong became more than an opportunity to find a different job.

It became an opportunity to break the cycle and build a different future.
